Wood City Riders

Trail Conditions

March 16, 2016

Hope many of you have been out and about enjoying our wonderful trails. Several of our club members have been working diligently on maintaining the trails for you. Did you know that work continues throughout the year? If you have ridden the trails, you will notice some areas may have been slightly re-routed. Much thanks goes out to those members who not only maintain these trails during the riding season, but also during our off-season. If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to one of the members of the Wood City Riders Board of Directors. Remember, April 1st, 2016, the trails officially close.

October 26, 2015

The trails officially open December 1st. Let the snow begin!
Check into snowmobile safety training for the kid. Check out the SAFETY TRAINING link in the left menu. Ride SAFE this season!!

Jan. 30, 2014

The trails maintained by the Wood City Riders Snowmobile Club in and around Cloquet are in excellent condition at this time. All trails are being groomed on a weekly basis, and this will continue as long as there is good snow for grooming operations. Enjoy our trails and PLEASE ride SAFE!!!

December 8, 2013

The Wood City Riders Snowmobile Club will begin grooming trails on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013. Our goal is to have the entire trail system groomed by Friday afternoon. As in other years, there are a couple spots in the swamps that could be troublesome for the heavy groomers, so watch out in these areas. Please be careful when out on the trails as it is early in the season.

Ride safe, and enjoy our trails, and watch this site for further updates

February 14, 2013

All the trails maintained by the Wood City Riders are open and in good riding condition. The bridge issues mentioned in the previous update have been corrected. Last week all of our trails were packed down with the groomers and this week everything was groomed, with the last two trails being groomed today. The 8" of snow that fell last Sunday really helped our trail system. Another 8" of snow would put our trails in great shape. The Big Lake Trail has a couple rough spots in the swampy areas due to the low water levels last fall. Riders need to slow down and be careful in these areas.

Enjoy our trails and please ride safe!

December 22, 2012

The segment of the Iverson Trail between the Moorhead Road to the south and the junction of the White Pine Trail (Scanlon) to the north is closed due to significant damage to the bridge at Otter Creek. With a little colder temps, a crew was able to get out in the swamp and examine the bridge. The June flood did considerable damage to bridge and its footings and it is not usable at this time. We are looking at a couple different alternatives to get across the creek. While the trails are not open now due to a lack of snow, we hope to have a creek crossing ASAP and have the trail ready for the next large snowfall.

Watch here for more updates and have a Happy Holiday!

December 10, 2012

The Wood City Riders Snowmobile Club had a busy fall clearing trails and repairing damage caused by the June floods. All of our trail system has been worked on with the exception of some low lying areas which remain very wet and are inaccessible to our trail maintenance equipment. The six inches of snow over the weekend of Dec. 8th and 9th was a very welcome sight. However, we need that much again before grooming operations will start. Once riders hit the trails, we ask that you please spread out on the trails and pack down the entire width of the trail in order for the frost to go deeper and help support our groomers. This is especially important in the swamps and other low lying spots.

We have two bridges that snowmobilers will need to use caution when crossing. One is on the Iverson Trail, about a mile south of our club buildings. The bridge deck is in poor shape and needs to be replaced. However, the bridge sits in the middle of one of the wet areas and until things freeze up, we can't get there to redeck it. The other is on the Big Lake Trail in the U of M Forestry Research Center. The June floods wiped out many of the beaver dams in this area and now we have a bridge and it's approach ramps which are very high. Extreme caution should be exercised when crossing this bridge until the groomers are out and can build up the approaches with snow.

Happy and Safe Sledding!

March 1, 2012

The snow is finally here...Over 12" in the last few days! Our groomers will be out on the trails today and tomorrow. The goal is to have our entire trail system groomed for the weekend. This may be our one and only weekend of riding locally. Enjoy our trails and please ride safe!

Feb. 18, 2012

It's been a disappointing year for riding our Cloquet area trails. However, several of our club members were able to make a weekend ride recently at Fortune Bay. On Friday, the group took a 44 mile ride to check things out. Although the weather was quite cold (MINUS 12!), they were up to the challenge and added another 125 miles on Saturday. Roger Paulson guided the die-hards through the scenic Lake Vermillion area, up to Crane Lake where they ate lunch, and then Wolf Bay Lodge where they stopped to enjoy a little shopping. Everyone then settled in for an evening of socializing. We hope the rest of you have been able to take advantage of areas that were lucky enough to see snow. If not, keep those fingers crossed that next will be better. Reminder...join a club in your area. The trails need work year around so they are ready when the white stuff does fall!

Wood City Riders Trail Report, Dec.19, 2011

The trails in the Cloquet area remain closed due to a lack of any snow. That lack of snow combined with cold weather has allowed our Trail Taskmasters, and their crews, more time and better conditions to complete trail work, especially in the low and swampy parts of our trail system. The majority of our trail system has been mowed with our new four-wheel drive compact tractor and mower, and our trails are in the best pre-snow condition ever. The groomers and drags are ready and waiting. All we need is SNOW!!!

December 4, 2011

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!!
Well, the white stuff is finally falling. Yeah! However, our trail master reported there isn't enough snow to open the trails. Trails are normally open December 1st, but Mother Nature isn't cooperating yet. On a bright note, the cold weather should help to set things up for the 2011-2012 season...so keep your fingers crossed that we get more snow soon.
Stay tuned for future trail condition updates. And remember, no matter what trail system you are riding, "sled safe".
See you on the trails soon. Happy Holidays!

August 23, 2011

Where did the summer go? Labor Day is just around the corner, all the while trail reports have been coming in all summer long. Our trail masters (along with a few other club members) have been scouting the trails, determining what work is needed. In order for our trails to be in the condition we have come to expect and enjoy, we need members and volunteers to join those that have already put so much time and effort into our trail system. Not a member of Wood City Riders? Pick up the phone, email us, or come on out and have some fun at the next club meeting on August 25th at Cheers in Cloquet. We hope to see you soon, not just on the trails. Stay tuned for an awesome winter folks - before you know it, we'll be staring at the white stuff!

January 15, 2011

Wow - does it get any better than this? The powder just keeps coming this year. We have several feet of snow and the trails are awesome! (A special thanks again to those members who were able to get out and help clear and make the trails fun and safe). We would love to hear from you so be sure to check out our Facebook page. Post pictures and tell us about your riding experience. Better yet, become a club member and share your experiences with us at a meeting. Remember...Ride Smart -- Ride Safe!

November 30, 2010

This is it! The trails will officially be open tomorrow, Wednesday, December 1, 2010. In the last few days we've seen some interesting weather. Rain, sleet, slush and snow. Unfortunately, this weather hasn't helped to improve our trails. Several miles of trail is still in need of repair. For those of you that have the fever to ride, please know that our area swamps and lakes are NOT frozen. Travel at your OWN RISK and be aware of those you are riding alongside or sharing the trail with.
If you have any questions about our trails, feel free to contact Roger Paulson @ 218-879-4020 or Bill Soboleski @ 218-393-9974. Ride Smart -- Ride Safe!

November 18, 2010

It's been over a week since the snow fell. What a beautiful sight! How many of you die-hards took your sled out for a "little" ride? Braaappp....
The trails aren't ready for grooming just yet, but when they are they will be impressive. Not only was the club able to purchase a new groomer this year, but over the course of the summer several members went to work clearing brush, widening trails, fixing bridges and much more. On behalf of all trail riders, I thank each and every one of them!
We have several events and rides planned in the coming months (thanks Roger!), so be sure to check out our events link or attend the next meeting on Tuesday, November 23rd at the new building. Feel free to contact a club officer for directions. Hope to see you there and on the trails!

August 25, 2010

Where has the summer gone? Kids are getting ready to go back to school, the fall colors are beginning to show, and Hay Days is just around the corner! Before we know it, the white stuff will begin to fly. There is a lot to do to get our trails ready. Stop by a club meeting to see how you can help. Not a member? No problem! Stop by and get signed up. Bring a friend. See you Thursday, August 26th.

June 19, 2010

Well, it's almost summer. Grandma's Marathon was run today in Duluth, Minnesota - what a beautiful day. As of 9 p.m. the temperature is still a nice cool 61 degrees. Although it's summertime, the club has been busy with monthly meetings, discussing new equipment, buildings and much, much more. Hope to see everyone at a meeting this Thursday, June 24th.

As of April 12, 2010...rather dry and dusty??

OK...so there was no March Blizzard of 2010 to speak of. It could have been worse...there might not have been enough snow to even ride this past season. However, many of us were lucky enough to start up the sleds and RIDE! Check out the Wood City Riders Facebook page to get a glimpse of some of the events and fun rides that took place.

Although there is no snow on the ground right now, it's not too early to begin thinking ahead to the next season. It will be here before we know it! There is a lot of work that will need to be done to make sure that our trail system is fit for riders of all ages. Keep watching our website for dates, times and locations when members of the club will be "hitting" the trails for a little housekeeping. Make it a family day and bring the kids along.

Also, check out the Meetings page for the next meeting location. The club meets the 4th Thursday of every month.

Enjoy your summer!
